15 Aquatic Classes Available This Summer

Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center has 12 classes beginning this month. The center, which offers year-round swim lessons for all ages and ability levels, has classes for children as young as 6 months old up to adults. Registration for the next session begins on Friday, July 6th. Check out these aquatic classes that start next week. Starbabies & Me – 4 weeks (Ages 6 mos. to 3) This class introduces infants and toddlers to the water in a fun and loving environment. Adults who accompany participants will be taught safety and drowning prevention. Parents or caregivers are taught the proper techniques to teach their infants and toddlers how to float, submerge, move in water and rollover. Classes incorporate songs and activities to meet the swim skill benchmarks. Safety skill benchmarks are designed to educate parents or caregivers. Preschool Starfish – 4 weeks (Ages 3 to 5) Preschool children will focus on developing a high comfort level in the water and a readiness to swim. Children will be introduced to functional swim skills like trust and submersion, body positions, air recovery, rotary movement, forward movement, direction change and age appropriate safety skills. Starfish Swim School – 4 weeks (Ages 6 to 16) This class is designed to improve comfort and skill in the water, regardless of past swimming experience. Topics covered in these aquatic classes include breathing control, floating, prone glide, back float, arm strokes, kicking, and other elementary skills. Starfish Stroke School – 4 weeks (Ages 6 to 16) This class will review previous level swimming skills and benchmarks. Students will develop endurance and refine freestyle. Students will learn flip turns, surface dives, and stroke techniques for backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke. Pre-Competitive Swim Class – 4 weeks (Ages 6 to 16) Participants will improve swimming skills by refining the competitive strokes learned in previous aquatic classes. Participants will also be prepared for competitive swimming. Flip turns, competitive starts, and dives will be taught. Prerequisite: Starfish Stroke School. This class may be repeated. Semi-Private Swim Class – 4 weeks (Ages 3 to 16) With three students per instructor, this class offers small group instruction for beginner and competitive swimmers of all ages and levels. This class is designed to offer a more individualized approach to learning how to swim. Private Swim Class – 4 weeks (Ages 6 mos. and up) This individual class is designed to teach swimming skills depending on the skill level of the participant. Participants will begin with fundamentals and work up to competitive skills. Board Diving – 4 weeks (Ages 6 to 16) This class is designed to teach the basics of one-meter and three-meter board diving. Participants will be taught the fundamentals of basic board diving through safe teaching techniques. Prerequisite: Standing front dive and Starfish Stroke School. This class may be repeated. Adult Beginning Swimming – 4 weeks (Ages 16 and up) This class is a basic swim course for adults learning to swim. Participants will be taught floating and basic stroke techniques. This class will introduce front crawl and elementary backstroke skills. No previous skills required. Adult Intermediate Swimming – 4 weeks (Ages 16 and up) Participants will be taught how to improve the front crawl stroke and be introduced to breaststroke and sidestroke. Depending on the skill level, adults will be introduced to treading water, diving and flip turns. The majority of class time will be spent in the deep water. Prerequisite: Adult Beginning level swimming skills. Adaptive Swim Class – 4 weeks (Ages 4 to 18) This class is designed for students who can function in a 3 to 1 student to instructor ratio. Students who need additional assistance are welcome to attend with an accompanying adult. Private aquatic classes available. Polo Buddies (Ages 7 to 15) Polo Buddies is a beginner’s level water polo class for boys and girls ages 8-15. With smaller class sizes and multiple coaches, students receive more individual instruction. In a Polo Buddies class, no student gets left behind. This class is perfect for any child. It is also an inclusive class for kids with ADHD (ADD), Asperger’s, anxiety, or muscle coordination issues. Students must be able to follow verbal directions, work in groups of 3 to 4 and must be safe in deep water. Polo Buddies is a group class and not designed for students who may need individual instruction. Fundamentals of Water Polo – 4 weeks (Ages 10 to 15) Fundamentals of Water Polo is a water polo class for boys and girls ages 10-15. Only those students who have been invited up from the Polo Buddies class will be allowed to take the Fundamentals of Water Polo Class. This course will build on the skills learned in the Polo Buddies class, namely eggbeater (treading water), head up and head down freestyle, backstroke, ball handling skills, and passing technique. This class will encourage teamwork, good character, and having fun learning a great sport. Students will need to bring goggles. Girls must wear one-piece suits, and boys must wear speedos or jammers, no board shorts. Students can only attend the Fundamentals class in which they are signed up. There are no makeups. Prerequisite: Polo Buddies Mermaid Synchronized Swimming (Ages 6 to 16) This class is designed to teach participants the Olympic sport of synchronized swimming which combines ballet, swimming, and gymnastics. Participants will be introduced to basic skills such as sculling, figure skills, and will be taught a routine set to music. Prerequisite: Starfish Stroke School. Log Rolling – 4 weeks (Ages 8 and up) Splash! is excited to offer this activity! Log Rolling is an exhilarating water sport for participants and spectators alike. Log Rolling challenges your balance while providing a strong core and cardio workout. After participants learn the basic steps and improve their own personal skills, they can progress to challenges that involve cooperation and/or competition with partners and teams.
