Leslie Uggams as 'Lena Horne' in Stormy Weather

La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts and McCoy Rigby Entertainment presents Leslie Uggams starring as “Lena Horne” in Stormy Weather from October 19 through November 11. The Los Angeles Times calls it “An ambitious, high voltage affair”. Tony & Emmy Award-winner Leslie Uggams plays the legendary “Lena Horne” in this fascinating new bio-musical Stormy Weather featuring sensational hits such as “The Lady Is A Tramp,” “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “Stardust,” and “How Deep is the Ocean.” With glamour, grace and an inner fire that blazed a trail for generations, the powerful Lena Horne never failed to amaze. Taking both Hollywood and the music industry by storm, her voice resonated throughout the decades, not only through her incredible vocal talent but also through her determination to fight for what she believed. This sensational musical extravaganza takes us on the sometimes stormy, always extraordinary journey of an American icon. Uggams also starred in the world premiere of Stormy Weather, which took place at the Pasadena Playhouse in 2008, where it broke that theater’s all-time house attendance record. Her career has brought her from Harlem (Uptown) to Broadway (Downtown), the big screen (Skyjacked) to television (The Leslie Uggams Show). She is perhaps best known for her stirring portrayal of Kizzy in the landmark TV mini-series Alex Haley’s “Roots” (Critics Choice Award, Emmy, and Golden Globe nominations). Now, after six decades on stage and screen, Ms. Uggams is a legend in her own right. She is now on the Board of Directors of the Apollo Theater, and she was recently awarded an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from the University of Connecticut. She is also the recipient of an American Artist Award from Arena Stage in Washington, DC. Currently, Leslie can be seen as Leah Walker in the hit television series Empire. She also stars as Blind Al in the blockbuster 20th Century Fox film Deadpool starring Ryan Reynolds. Soon she will co-star in the HBO original movie The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks with Oprah Winfrey. Other recent television appearances include Nurse Jackie; The Good Wife; Memphis Beat; and NYC 22. Audience Talk-Back sessions with the cast will be Wednesdays, October 24 and November 7.
