A Night with Janis Joplin Sneak Peek

La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts and McCoy Rigby Entertainment present their first Broadway show for the 2018-2019 season, A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN.  Premiering this Friday, September 14th and playing through October 7th, you will not want to miss what Variety calls “A celebration of the blues.” This Broadway.com video provides a behind the scenes sneak peek of this award-winning show. With interviews from Mary Bridget Davies, Broadway’s original “Janis” in her Tony Award-nominated performance, and writer/director Randy Johnson, you’ll learn why A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN has been such a hit. Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Janis Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the queen of rock & roll. The unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort, made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock.  Fueled by such unforgettable songs as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Piece of My Heart,” “Mercedes Benz,” “Cry Baby” and “Summertime” plus a remarkable cast headed by the show’s original Broadway star, Mary Bridget Davies, A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN is a musical journey celebrating Janis and her biggest musical influences—icons like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, who inspired one of rock & roll’s greatest legends. That voice—high, husky, earthy, explosive—remains among the most distinctive and galvanizing in pop history. But Janis Joplin didn’t merely possess a great instrument; she threw herself into every syllable, testifying from the very core of her being. She claimed the blues, soul, gospel and rock with unquestionable authority and verve, fearlessly inhabiting psychedelic guitar jams, back-porch roots and everything in between. Her volcanic performances left audiences stunned and speechless, while her sexual magnetism, world-wise demeanor and flamboyant style shattered every stereotype about female artists—and essentially invented the “rock mama” paradigm. Upon gaining local acclaim for her work in various rock bands, Mary Bridget Davies was asked to sit in with Big Brother & The Holding Company (Janis Joplin’s original band, with whom she would later tour) as well as legendary blues guitarist Robert Lockwood Jr. Her travels have taken her all around the world, including a run on Broadway in “A Night With Janis Joplin,” for which she received her Tony® nomination for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical.” Audience Talk-Back sessions with the cast will be Wednesdays, Sept. 19 and Oct. 3. Open-Captioned performance: Saturday, Sept. 29 at 2 pm. ASL interpreted performance: Saturday, Oct. 6 at 2 pm.
