La Mirada joins with cities throughout our nation to invite residents to get out and play this July in celebration of National Parks and Recreation Month! Since 1985, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) has encouraged communities to take part in National Parks and Recreation Month and enjoy the benefits of parks and recreational activities.
“With warm weather approaching, now is the perfect time to visit local parks and enjoy outdoor summer activities,” says Community Services Director Oliver Osuna.
This July, explore all the fun and games offered in local parks and recreation! With everything from summer camps to sports leagues and special events, there are plenty of ways to get in the game.
When residents participate in park and recreation programs or just enjoy activities with friends and family at a neighborhood park, they improve the overall health and wellness of the community. Studies have shown that parks have an impact on the health of those that use them.
- The Centers for Disease Control found that increased access to places for physical activity led to a 25.6 percent increase in people exercising 3 or more times per week.
- Living close to parks and other recreation facilities is consistently related to higher physical activity levels for both adults and youth.
- On average, children who live in greener environments weigh less than children who live in less green areas.
- Children that have easy access to a playground are approximately five times more likely to have a healthy weight than children that do not have easy access to playgrounds.
- The nation’s park and recreation facilities are on the frontline in the battle against the obesity epidemic and other chronic health issues.
