The Earl & Virginia Green Art Gallery at Biola University is proud to present the exhibition “Seeds of Contemplation” featuring work by Long Beach artist Kiyomi Fukui and Biola Art alumnus Greg Lookerse. A gallery reception to celebrate the exhibition will take place on Tuesday, September 10th from 6:30-8:30 pm. The exhibition will remain on view through September 20th. Admission is free for all visitors.
In his book Seeds of Contemplation, author Thomas Merton states, “Every moment and every event of every man’s life on earth plants something in his soul. For just as the wind carries thousands of invisible and visible winged seeds, so the stream of time brings with it germs of spiritual vitality that come to rest imperceptibly in the minds and wills of men. Most of these unnumbered seeds perish and are lost because men are not prepared to receive them.”
Like Merton, artists Kiyomi Fukui and Greg Lookerse encourage and challenge us to put off the many distractions of modern life, slow down, and prepare ourselves to be more receptive to the quiet and unassuming seeds of “spiritual vitality” that surround us.
Also featuring: Kiyomi Fukui’s “Apologetic Garden”, an interactive public-engagement project where visitors are invited to write letters of apology and bury them in the temporary planter boxes on the patio in front of the gallery. Over the course of the exhibition, the collection of planted letters will give rise to a vibrant vegetable garden.
The Green Art Gallery at Biola University is located on the Biola campus, near the bell tower and adjacent to Mayers Auditorium. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Campus visitors should enter campus at the main Biola University entrance on Biola Avenue.
