Don’t miss a free day of fishing and fish education for kids ages 5-15 years old. The event begins with a first-come, first-serve pancake breakfast at 7 am, sponsored by Kiwanis International. The fishing derby kickoff is at 8 am and goes until 11 am. Awards will be presented immediately after the Derby. Fun for the whole family.
Children may take part in free fishing lessons as well as other activities. No fishing license required for children 15 years or younger. Participants are requested to bring their own fishing pole, as only a limited number of poles are available for loan.
Fishing in the City Clinics gives people living in the city an opportunity to learn how to fish, and to fish close to home. The Fishing in the City program was created in 1993 to improve angling opportunities to California’s growing urban population. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has a number of downloadable publications in English and Spanish that are great to get kids excited about fishing, including the following:
- “Learning to Fish, Fishing to Learn” – a third-grade curriculum guide (PDF)
- Fishing Is Simple Handbook (F.I.S.H.) (PDF)
- Fishing ABC’s Coloring Book (PDF)
- After the Catch… Preparing and cooking your fish (PDF)
The annual Youth Fishing Derby is hosted by Janice Hahn, 4th District – Los Angeles County Supervisor and Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation. For more information on the annual Youth Fishing Derby call (562) 902-5645 or (626) 333-1369.
