Biola University invites you to attend Meredith Willson’s The Music Man starting Friday, January 17th and running through Saturday, January 25th. This production, directed by Michele Stevens, takes place at Biola’s Lansing Recital Hall and is a joint collaboration of Biola Youth Theatre, Conservatory of Music, and Theatre Department. An American classic that the entire family will love!
When Harold Hill, a traveling con man, arrives in River City, he convinces the locals to start a band by purchasing the uniforms and instruments from him. His intention is to flee as soon as he receives the money. Librarian Marian Paroo suspects Harold is a fraud but holds her tongue since her moody brother, Winthrop, is excited about the band. As Harold begins to develop feelings for Marian, he faces a difficult decision about skipping town.
One of the most universally cherished treasures of the American musical theater, The Music Man was an instant smash hit when it premiered on Broadway on December 19, 1957. It went on to win five Tony Awards, including the prize for Best Musical and ran for 1,375 performances. The Smithsonian Institution ranks The Music Man as one of the “great glories” of American popular culture.
Biola Youth Theatre offers three productions each year, and each production offers unique opportunities and advantages for students of different age ranges: Young Players, Teen Players & All Players. Biola Youth Theatre is a true theatre company, not just a class or workshop.
It is one of the only youth theatre companies established in partnership with a university and has performed more than 60 shows since its formation in 1996.
