La Mirada Recognizes Resident Milestones

Celebrating 50th Wedding Anniversary & 90th Birthday

The La Mirada City Council recognized local residents who have met celebratory milestones at the City Council meeting held on February 14th.

La Mirada Residents Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary
The La Mirada City Council recognized residents David and Kathy Pasillas and congratulated them on their 50th wedding anniversary.

David and Kathy began their life together during their junior year at John Glenn High School in Norwalk when Kathy asked David to be her date to the “girl ask boy” Winter Formal.  After graduation in 1971, Kathy attended Cerritos College and David joined the United States Air Force and would serve his country for 22 years.

Their long-distance courtship went to the next step when David proposed to Kathy after making her climb a large boulder near Mirror Lake in Yosemite National Park.  Today, the couple still call the boulder their “rock” and go to the location when they visit Yosemite.  On February 24, 1973, David and Kathy got married at Faith Lutheran Church in Whittier.

In 1976, they moved to Bitburg Air Base, Germany, where their family grew with the births of their two children, Leanne and Zachary.  In September of 1985,  David and Kathy decided to become homeowners and the couple purchased their home in La Mirada.

Before officially retiring in 2012, Kathy was employed as an Executive Assistant with Watson Land Company in Carson and David served as the Public Works Facility Maintenance Manager in Buena Park.

As residents of La Mirada, they have been season subscribers at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts for 25 years and contributed to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life for 17 years.

Their retirement years have been filled with many traveling adventures including road trips to all 48 states in the continental United States and cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, and the Panama Canal.  Their next adventure will be in Europe for their 50th wedding anniversary.

The City’s Anniversary Recognition program recognizes La Mirada residents on their 50th, 60th, 70th wedding anniversaries.

City of La Mirada Recognizes 90th Birthday Milestone
The La Mirada City Council recognized resident, Jeanette Jenkins for her 90th birthday milestone.

Jeanette Jenkins was born in Buffalo, New York on February 3, 1933.  When she was 16 years old, Jeanette along with her family moved to California, where she would then attend Downey High School.  In 1954, Jeanette married her first husband and by 1960 the couple purchased their La Mirada home for the price of $14,000.

Following the birth of her third child in 1963, Jeanette began her involvement in PTA activities with local schools.  She was involved in many local causes and organizations including the Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Musical Theatre West, Soroptimist International and Relay for Life.  Jeanette served on the Public Safety Commission from 1975 to 1977.  She also served on the La Mirada Senior Council for many years.

Jeanette extended her involvement with the community through her work at Home Saving & Loan.  In 1981, she became the first woman president of the La Mirada Chamber of Commerce.  While working with the Chamber of Commerce, she met her future husband, Bob Jenkins.  They shared the distinction of being the only husband and wife who served as president of the Chamber of Commerce.  Jeanette and her children remain active in the community.
