The City’s efforts to improve its infrastructure continue throughout La Mirada. Preserving an attractive community through well-maintained facilities, parks, streets, sidewalks, median landscaping, signage, and traffic signals remains a top priority. Several capital projects were completed in the past year and more are currently under construction or scheduled to begin construction later this year.
A recent neighborhood slurry seal was completed in neighborhoods bounded by Rosecrans Avenue, east City limits, Alondra Boulevard, Stage Road, and La Mirada Creek. Pavement rehabilitation on Imperial Highway from Valley View Avenue to Wicker Drive was also completed. Drainage improvements were made along La Mirada Boulevard and the exterior surfaces of Neff House, George House, and Carriage Barn were repaired and repainted. In efforts to modernize aging energy infrastructure and improve comfort and safety of facilities, LED lighting and heating and air conditioning units were replaced at most City buildings.
Traffic signal upgrades on Santa Gertrudes Avenue at Adelfa Drive, Alicante Road, Foster Road, and Olive Branch Drive are now complete. Improvements included the installation of additional signal heads, the upsizing of signal heads from 8” to 12”, upgrades to the pedestrian signal heads and push buttons, the replacement of high-pressure sodium overhead safety lights with energy-efficient LED overhead safety lights, the installation of new safety light poles and new mast arm poles to support new signal heads. A protected left-turn phase was added at the Foster Road intersection. The upgrades will improve the safety and efficiency of the intersections.
Upcoming capital improvement projects in 2024 include pavement rehabilitation on Valley View Avenue, intersection improvements at Valley View Avenue and Alondra Boulevard, wayfinding signage replacement, fountain modifications and roof replacement at City Hall, pedestrian/vehicle bridge replacement at Creek Park, a new traffic signal on Telegraph Road at Wicker Drive/Hutchins Drive, and several slurry seal projects. Solar carport structures and electric vehicle charging stations will be installed within the Civic Center parking lots.
“A well-maintained infrastructure is more than aesthetically pleasing,” says Public Works Director Mark Stowell. “Regular preventive maintenance extends the life of our roadways, buildings and parks.”
