The City of La Mirada continues to demonstrate its commitment to safety by maintaining one of the lowest crime rates in the region and continues to be among the safest cities in Los Angeles County. The City’s low crime rate is attributed to a strong and collaborative partnership between the Public Safety Team and the community.
In 2024, there were 875 Part 1 crimes reported in La Mirada compared to 981 reported in 2023. The number of Part 1 crimes reported in other cities patrolled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department include Paramount 1,696; Bellflower 2,054; Norwalk 2,261; Cerritos 2,273; and Lakewood 2,325. The majority of Part 1 crimes in 2024 were property crimes. Of the 875 Part 1 crimes reported in La Mirada, 832 were property crimes. This accounts for 95 percent of Part 1 crimes reported in 2024. Crimes against persons decreased from 59 incidents in 2023 to 43 in 2024.
Larceny crimes decreased from 583 in 2023 to 516 in 2024. Larceny is defined as theft including grand theft and petty theft cases. Petty thefts increased from 188 cases in 2023 to 200 cases in 2024, with shoplifting being the primary factor contributing to this increase. There were some notable decreases including thefts from vehicles decreased from 183 cases in 2023 to 139 cases in 2024 and the number of grand thefts decreased from 212 cases in 2023 to 176 cases in 2024. The decrease can be attributed to fewer catalytic converters being stolen last year. In 2023, 89 catalytic converters were stolen from vehicles compared to 35 in 2024.
“La Mirada’s Special Assignment Officers (SAO) Team will maintain its focus on monitoring crime trends and collaborating closely with Patrol Deputies and Detectives,” says Assistant City Manager Anne Haraksin. “The team’s proactive approach remains vital to sustaining the low crime rate achieved in 2024.”
The Public Safety Team engaged in a variety of outreach efforts to educate the community on crime trends and prevention techniques. Neighborhood Watch meetings were held throughout La Mirada to educate residents. The Public Safety Team also partnered with the La Mirada Chamber of Commerce to host a National Coffee with a Cop event in October to allow the community to build a partnership with deputies and staff. Additionally, the Public Safety Team coordinated several community events including National Night Out.
The Public Safety Team will continue to prioritize high-visibility enforcement to deter criminal activity in commercial and residential areas. Deputies and Public Safety Officers will maintain a consistent presence as a proactive measure to prevent property crimes. Technology will continue to play a key role in these efforts, with upgraded Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) remaining in use at high-traffic intersections and other strategic locations. Additionally, the permanent cameras at Creek Park will continue to be used to monitor and investigate vandalism and other crimes.
“The Public Safety Team remains committed to high-visibility enforcement in both commercial and residential areas,” says Sergeant Oscar Rodriguez. “Using technology like Automated License Plate Readers and surveillance cameras to effectively deter criminal activity and investigate crimes, ensures La Mirada remains one of the safest cities in the region.”
