La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts & McCoy Rigby Entertainment has announced their 2018-2019 season of shows.
They start the season with A Night with Janis Joplin, with Broadway’s original “Janis” re-creating her Tony-nominated role as the legendary singer; followed by the incomparable Leslie Uggams starring as the ground-breaking Lena Horne in Stormy Weather; then, be in the room where it actually happens as our great country gets founded in 1776; next, experience that ‘glorious’ feeling all over again with one of the greatest musicals of all time Singin’ in the Rain from Emmy-nominated “So You Think You Can Dance” choreographer Spencer Liff; and the season finale triumphs with the family favorite, the ‘tale as old as time,’ Disney’s Beauty and the Beast! This extraordinary season also includes the bonus options of the dynamic duo of Donny & Marie, and one of the greatest showmen to ever command the stage, Paul Anka.
The 41st season will feature:
A Night with Janis Joplin
September 14 – October 7, 2018
Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Janis Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the queen of rock & roll. The unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort, made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. Fueled by such unforgettable songs as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Piece of My Heart,” “Mercedes Benz,” “Cry Baby” and “Summertime” plus a remarkable cast headed by the show’s original Broadway star, Mary Bridget Davies, A NIGHT WITH Janis Joplin is a musical journey celebrating Janis and her biggest musical influences-icons like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, who inspired one of rock & roll’s greatest legends.
Stormy Weather
October 19 – November 11, 2018
Tony & Emmy Award-winner Leslie Uggams stars as the legendary “Lena Horne” in this fascinating new bio-musical featuring sensational hits such as “The Lady Is A Tramp,” “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “Stardust” and “How Deep is the Ocean.” With glamour, grace and an inner fire that blazed a trail for generations, the powerful Lena Horne never failed to amaze. Taking both Hollywood and the music industry by storm, her voice resonated throughout the decades, not only through her incredible vocal talent but also through her determination to fight for what she believed. This sensational musical extravaganza takes us on the sometimes stormy, always extraordinary journey of an American icon.
