The City of La Mirada offers two programs to honor the bravery, selfless service, and sacrifice of La Mirada residents serving in the Armed Forces.
Blue Star Banner Program
Blue Star Service Banners are offered to families who have a loved one serving in the military, including activated members of the National Guard and Reserves, whether the family member is a son, daughter, brother, sister, wife, husband, cousin, grandchild, etc. This national program is part of a tradition that began in 1917 when displaying this banner at home became a symbol of a loved one in the service. The flags gained widespread use during World War II, when many U.S. homes displayed the banner to honor those who served.
The banner displayed in the front window of the home shows a family’s pride in their loved one serving in the military and reminds others that preserving America’s freedom demands much. The Blue Star stands for hope and pride for the troops. A Yellow Star stands for wounds sustained overseas, and a Gold Star stands for sacrifice of life. By placing these stars in the windows of homes and vehicles, the community can recognize and support the troops serving our country.
Since the City’s implementation of the program in 2003, the City has received over 65 applications for participation in the Blue Star Service Program. The City continues to recognize La Mirada residents who are protecting our nation and encourages families with loved ones in the service to contact City Hall at (562) 943-0131. Applications are also available on the City’s website at cityoflamirada.org.
Military Banner Program
The City honors La Mirada residents who are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces on active duty with a banner prominently displayed along Rosecrans Avenue adjacent to a flag memorial saluting military personnel. The military banners display the names of those serving our country, along with their branch of service.
These banners are offered to residents free of charge and require an application and proof of residency. A serviceperson’s immediate family member or legal guardian may request a military banner on their behalf. Help honor the brave men and women of La Mirada who are serving at home and abroad. Become a sponsor of the Military Banner Program and show your support for our hometown heroes. Applications are available on the City’s website at cityoflamirada.org.
