Biola one of the top 25 Theatre B.A. Programs

OnStage Blog evaluated and ranked top programs across the country

Each year, OnStage Blog takes a look at the Bachelor of Art theatre programs across the United States. Onstage Blog named Biola University as one of the top 25 Theatre B.A. Programs for 2018-2019. Other schools included Brown University, Vassar College, and Fordham University. The only other Southern California Theatre B.A. program in the ranking was CSU Long Beach.

OnStage Blog highlighted the fact that Theatre majors at Biola have an opportunity to participate in dramatic productions through Theatre 21. This 94-seat performing arts venue can act as a launch pad for students’ creative and professional careers, as it is the primary home of Biola’s theatre program. It offers high-quality dramatic productions each semester, which are open to Biola students, alumni, faculty, staff and the general public.

OnStage Blog’s rankings are based on a rating system that looks at a number of different factors that should be considered when looking into these schools. While many Bachelor of Fine Art programs also have B.A. programs, OnStage Blog focused this ranking on schools that only offer B.A. in Theatre programs.

OnStage Blog states, “Because it’s important for families and prospective students to have as many resources as possible when looking at what college to attend. Too many times we’ve seen incorrect information spread about what is the best program to audition for. Too many times we’ve seen the same schools ranked number one over and over again without a true vetting. So we wanted to change that.”

As opposed to other college ranking publications, OnStage Blog’s rankings are determined by people experienced in the specific fields. Their research staff includes current and former educators, students, alums, and working professionals in the areas of dance, design & technology and performing. After looking at each school, the evaluation team is asked to fill out a scorecard and rate each school from 1 to 10 in the following categories:

  • Quality of Facilities
  • Cost / Scholarship Opportunities
  • Quality of Faculty (Terminal degrees, professional experience, and full-time vs adjunct)
  • Admissions / Auditions / Selectivity
  • Quality of Curriculum
  • Career & Alumni Support
  • Performance Opportunities

In Biola’s theatre major, students gain a deeper understanding of the dramatic craft, including acting, directing, design and storytelling. With both the knowledge and experience gained, graduated are prepared for a professional career in theatre and other communicative arts venues.
