Experience the legendary sounds of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers performed live this Saturday, April 6th at 8 pm at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. Classic Albums Live has earned their reputation of performing rock’s most influential albums live on stage note for note, cut for cut. Unlike with clone or tribute bands, there is no attempt to impersonate or look like the artists being covered, it’s just down to the music. Featuring a roster of world-class musicians from across the globe, they will perform Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ 1979 critically acclaimed album, Damn the Torpedoes in its entirety, followed by a set of greatest hits.
Damn the Torpedoes was the band’s first top ten album, rising to #2 on the Billboard albums chart. (Fun fact: the album held #2 for seven weeks, kept from #1 by Pink Floyd’s The Wall). With such classic songs as “Don’t Do Me Like That” and “Refugee” the album was a breakthrough success for the band.
Rolling Stone exclaimed that it was the “album we’ve all been waiting for – that is, if we were all Tom Petty fans, which we would be if there were any justice in the world.”
The brainchild of Craig Martin, Classic Albums Live began in low-key fashion in Toronto in 2003 and it is a now thriving enterprise in both Canada and the US. Reflecting on the series success, Martin notes “it’s a case of if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. We stay with the tried and true, and after years we know what works and what doesn’t. People love classic rock. It has clearly endured and will continue to do so, as shown by the fact that people are bringing their kids. It’s a bonding experience.”
