As a puppy, Bella finds her way into the arms of Lucas, a young man who gives her a good home. When Bella becomes separated from Lucas, she soon finds herself on an epic 400-mile journey to reunite with her beloved owner. Along the way, the lost but spirited dog touches the lives of an orphaned mountain lion, a down-on-his-luck veteran and some friendly strangers who happen to cross her path.

The filmmakers were intent on choosing a rescue dog to star in the survival tale adaptation of the novel by W. Bruce Cameron. The pooch also had to be a pit bull mix, as in the book. An Internet search ended at a Tennessee no-kill shelter, which had rescued Shelby from a squalid life in a nearby landfill.

The film is directed by Charles Martin Smith from a screenplay by W. Bruce Cameron and Cathryn Michon, based on the 2017 book of the same name by Cameron. The film stars Ashley Judd, Edward James Olmos, Alexandra Shipp, Wes Studi, Chris Bauer, Barry Watson, and Jonah Hauer-King.

W. Bruce Cameron is most famous for his novel A Dog’s Purpose, which spent 19 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was followed by a sequel called A Dog’s Journey.

Released in January 2019, A Dog’s Way Home grossed $80 million so far at the box office. MPAA Rating: PG; Parental Guidance Suggested; for thematic elements, some peril, and language.
