La Mirada students will wear red during Red Ribbon Week, October 20–24, with school rallies led by the City’s Public Safety Team. Guest speakers will encourage students to make healthy, drug-free choices every day.
Parents play an important role, too! The Public Safety Team reminds families that open conversations at home help reinforce positive decision-making. When parents talk with their children about the harmful effects of drugs, kids are more likely to avoid alcohol and drug use and stay involved in healthy activities. For more information, call Public Safety at (562) 902-2960.
The National Family Partnership organized the first Nationwide Red Ribbon Campaign in response to the murder of Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Camarena was tortured and killed in Mexico in 1985. After his murder, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America.
