La Mirada experienced one of the region’s lowest crime rates in 2019 and remains among the safest cities in Los Angeles County and northern Orange County. The City views public safety as one of its most important responsibilities and allocates significant resources towards reducing crime to preserve La Mirada’s long-standing reputation as one of the safest communities in the region. A strong partnership between the Public Safety Team and the community helps achieve this goal. According to a recent crime analysis of surrounding communities for 2019, La Mirada realized one of the lowest crime rates.
There were 790 Part 1 crimes reported in La Mirada compared to 921 in 2018. Part 1 crimes include homicide, rape, larceny, burglary, auto theft, robbery, assault, and arson. This represents an overall decrease of 14.2 percent from the previous year. La Mirada experienced the lowest number of Part 1 crimes in the southeast Los Angeles County and northern Orange County.
Captain Tatreau provided a detailed report on the number of crimes, response times, and arrests during the recent February 11th City Council Study Session. Tatreau said by keeping response times low, Sheriff’s deputies had additional time for patrolling and making proactive arrests. Tatreau went on to state the Public Safety Team’s goals for 2020. The Team will continue proactive policing, conducting probation and parole searches to hold offenders accountable, and reaching out to La Mirada residents and business owners in order to maintain the low crime rate.
La Mirada’s Public Safety Team promotes crime prevention and awareness throughout the year. Nineteen Neighborhood Watch meetings were held in the City to update the community on crime trends and provide tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of crime. The Public Safety Team also provides local businesses with educational safety tips through the Business Watch program.
The City encourages La Mirada residents and businesses to participate in the City’s crime prevention programs and to report suspicious activity. La Mirada’s Public Safety Team will continue to analyze crime trends to provide the community with crime prevention education.
In August, the City of La Mirada will host it’s annual National Night Out event at La Mirada Regional Park. The event is a great opportunity to meet members of La Mirada’s Public Safety team, visit information booths, and learn about the City’s anti-crime programs. Representatives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, La Mirada Public Safety Team, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and the Neighborhood Watch Program attend the event and provide information.
